Marietta City Schools’ Commitment to Scouting

The Atlanta Area Council has partnered with Marietta City Schools to provide after-school Scouting programs in eight different schools and serves over 300 youth each week!

Dr. Grant Rivera, Superintendent of Marietta City Schools, initiated the partnership and was awarded the Boy Scouts of America’s Whitney M. Young Jr. Service Award for his efforts. Individuals like Kimberly Custance, Director of Marietta Community School, and Delores Wiley, Before/After School Programs and Camps Coordinator, have been instrumental in growing the program into a successful one with special thanks to all the teachers helping serve as leaders to their students after school.

Hundreds of children have now had the opportunity to enjoy the Scouting experience through this special partnership. Eight elementary schools have a dedicated pack led by Atlanta Area Council Program Specialists. The program meets once a week after school where the children enjoy enriching Scouting experiences, learn valuable skills, and plan fun outings.

During the summer months, the program extends to include a 7-week-long day camp for students to get active and have fun! Marietta City Schools capped off the summer fun with a sponsored field trip to the Georgia Aquarium and World of Coca-Cola for over 150 youth who came to camp. This upcoming summer will be the 3rd anniversary of the camp’s ongoing effort to create memorable experiences for the youth.

In addition to eight packs, the partnership includes one troop out of Marietta High School. Last year, Gregory Frazier became the first Scout in the Marietta City Schools program to earn the Eagle Scout award with Leonardo Gonzalez just recently joining him as the second Scout to earn Eagle!

This partnership with Marietta City Schools is sponsored by Scoutreach and is a part of the Atlanta Area Council’s ongoing effort to break down barriers that might deter a child from becoming a Scout. We appreciate Marietta City School’s commitment to giving every child the opportunity to be a Scout and look forward to the continuation of this fruitful relationship.
