Marietta Teen Sets Milestone as Eagle Scout

Marietta teen Gregory Frazier made Atlanta Area Council history on September 18, 2021, when he was recognized as the first Scout to attain the rank of Eagle from a Scoutreach sponsored Program Specialist Led Unit.

Scoutreach’s Significance

Troop 340, where Gregory is a Scout, meets at the Anderson Boys & Girls Club and is sponsored by Scoutreach, a division of the Atlanta Area Council that breaks down barriers that might keep a child from becoming a Scout. Such support can include providing leadership of the Troop, financial assistance, uniforms, and program materials.

“The main focus of Scoutreach is to help ensure all youth, no matter their circumstances, are able to join and learn the importance of responsibility and sacrifice as a values-based leader from an early age,” explains Mike Dubose, VP of Scoutreach and Diverse Markets for the Atlanta Area Council. Dubose is a proud Eagle Scout himself and knows firsthand the importance of such a program for youth. Professionally, Dubose serves as President, Healthcare Market Division for ThermoFisher Scientific.

Gregory credits his Scoutmaster, Joshua Crawford, for the guidance and support necessary to his path to Eagle. Joshua is a Program Specialist at the Atlanta Area Council who serves as a leader for Scoutreach sponsored Packs and Troops and hopes to see many more Eagle Scouts like Gregory come out of the program.

My ideal approach for Scouts is giving them the opportunity to push themselves beyond their comfort zone so they can become stronger, active leaders within their communities. It’s not easy being brave or being a leader when you are learning to stand on your own two feet. Scouting gives children the opportunity to speak out and learn that nothing can keep you from your journey but you.

The Significance of Earning the Eagle Scout Rank

It takes a certain amount of discipline to earn the rank of Eagle. From a young age, a Scout must take on leadership roles within their troop and community, earn several merit badges that cover a broad range of topics and complete a significant community service project. Gregory’s Eagle Scout project involved creating 100 COVID awareness care kits and donating them to the students of Dunleith Elementary School. Each kit consisted of homemade hand sanitizer, a disposable mask, and pamphlets on COVID-19 guidelines. Gregory says, to him, the Eagle Scout rank means honor and discipline, and that to make it to the rank of Eagle means having all the tools necessary to make it through anything else in life.

The journey to reach the highly respected rank of Eagle Scout is a highly demanding one, one which requires Scouts to be diligent, focused, and highly compassionate. It is an achievement that recipients will carry for their entire lives, preparing them for any situation they may be in. They will always be able to step up and lead the way. We are proud of Gregory and all of our Eagle Scouts.
