Mark Deveau was never involved in Scouting growing up. And so, when his son joined he wasn’t very involved initially. He took his son to meetings, cheered him on at Courts of Honor, but wasn’t a key volunteer in the Pack or Troop.
Then, shortly after his son bridged over into Boy Scouts, Troop 241 needed a new Scoutmaster. Mark, having never been involved in Scouting on the regular weekly level, stepped up to take the role.
Reflecting on his first few years as Scoutmaster, Mark says he was initially surprised at the level of respect his uniform garnered in the community. Being an active Scout Leader, he says, made him feel more like a part of his community than just someone living there.
Mark Deveau is the Scoutmaster of Troop 241 in Canton, GA.
