When it came time to start on his Eagle Scout Service Project, Michael Orr wanted to do something different. While many Scouts build or repair community structures for their projects, Michael wanted to try something else. He partnered with a high profile community organization, the American Red Cross, and organized a blood drive.
Instead of gathering tools and labor, Michael went around town recruiting sponsors and donors from local businesses, Scouting units and his classes at school. He even spoke about the importance of blood donation during a chapel service and recruited many of his classmates as donors.
On the day of the Blood Drive, Michael more than tripled his goal. He gathered over 60 units of blood, breaking the Red Cross’s donation record in his district. He says the experience is something he’ll never forget as it taught him how to manage a project in the uncontrolled environment of the real world.
Michael Orr is an Eagle Scout from Troop 540 in Marietta, GA. He is also active in the Order of the Arrow.
